Scholarships

The George and Mary Lowrey Scholarship is awarded in recognition of a sophomore or junior who exemplifies outstanding scholarship, service, and merit. George Lowrey Jr. served as an educational resources specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Leisure Studies. He was especially recognized for his research in personnel and for his dedication to students and service. Three awards of $500 each will be presented to one student from each of the three Concentration Areas (Recreation, Sport and Tourism).

The Mary and Duke Regnier Scholarship will be presented to an undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding scholarship, a need for financial assistance, and a commitment to the leisure studies industry. Duke Regnier served as the first and only director of the Illinois Cooperative Extension Service, Rural Recreation Section. He is especially remembered for his warm and engaging personality and his innovative work in helping communities across Illinois plan recreation programs. An award of $500 will be presented to the recipient.

The John Bruce Capel Scholarship is presented to a sophomore or junior in Recreation, Sport and Tourism who has demonstrated outstanding ability and potential. Capel graduated in 1966 from the Department of Leisure Studies and was killed in Vietnam on May 2, 1996. An award of $500 will be presented to the recipient.

The Charles K. Brightbill Scholarship is given to a senior Recreation, Sport and Tourism major who has demonstrated outstanding ability. The award is given to honor Charles K. Brightbill who was a faculty member and department head here and is regarded as one of the prominent statesmen of the early recreation movement. An award of $500 will be presented to the recipient.
